The Interface Interference Dark Pattern
What is it?
Manipulating the user interface to privilege certain actions over others, thereby confusing or misleading the user. Common techniques include hidden information, visual misdirection, and trick questions.
Why it's harmful
It exploits visual hierarchy and cognitive biases to trick users into making choices they didn't intend, such as accepting invasive cookies or signing up for newsletters.
Example in the wild
"A giant, brightly colored "Accept All Cookies" button placed next to a tiny, gray, low-contrast text link that says "manage settings"."
How to fix it
Ensure equal visual weight for both "Accept" and "Reject" options. Do not use pre-checked checkboxes for marketing or tracking consent.
