The Privacy Zuckering Dark Pattern

Violates: GDPRViolates: CCPA/CPRA

What is it?

Tricking the user into publicly sharing more information about themselves than they intended to, often through confusing privacy settings or convoluted legal jargon.

Why it's harmful

It exploits the user's lack of understanding of complex privacy controls to harvest vast amounts of personal data without genuine informed consent.

Example in the wild

"Making the "Make my profile public" setting the default, and burying the option to make it private under 4 layers of confusingly-named menus."

How to fix it

Adopt "Privacy by Design." Default settings should always be the most privacy-preserving option. Controls should be prominent and easy to understand.
