The Sneaking Dark Pattern
What is it?
Attempting to hide, disguise, or delay the disclosure of information that is relevant to the user's decision-making process. This includes hidden costs, bait-and-switch, and sneaky subscriptions.
Why it's harmful
It fundamentally violates consumer trust by deceiving users about the true financial cost or commitment of a transaction until the very last moment.
Example in the wild
"Adding a "service fee" or automatically checking a box for "shipping insurance" on the final step of a checkout process without prior disclosure."
How to fix it
Disclose all fees, terms, and conditions clearly upfront before the user begins the checkout process. Do not automatically add items to a user's cart.
