The Fake Social Proof Dark Pattern

Violates: FTC Guidelines on EndorsementsViolates: EU Unfair Commercial Practices DirectiveViolates: India CCPA Guidelines

What is it?

Generating fabricated or misleading social signals to influence a user's behavior. This includes fake reviews, fake activity notifications, and artificial scarcity.

Why it's harmful

It exploits the psychological concept of herd mentality, tricking users into making rushed or uninformed decisions based on lies about what other people are doing.

Example in the wild

"A notification pops up saying "27 people are looking at this hotel room right now!" when in reality, the number is randomly generated by a script."

How to fix it

Ensure all social proof metrics (views, purchases, reviews) are 100% authentic and based on real-time, accurate data.
